Top-bar & National beehives - wildlife habitats - nest boxes

We produce quality Warré (vertical) and Horizontal top-bar beehives in our small family-run workshop in North Wales (wood-crafting for 4 generations). Additonally we supply Standard British National hives of any configuration. We also produce a variety of carefully and scientifically designed nesting boxes/habitats for solitary bees and also nest boxes for many bird species, bats and other animals

Top-bar hives for 'natural beekeeping'

Top-bar hives do not require frames or wax foundation and allow the bees to produce a 'natural' honeycomb which has a deep-curved shape and determine their own cell-size depending on their specific colony requirements. Made in pine with a natural (linseed oil) or painted finish or in untreated Red Cedar. All timbers are sourced as locally as possible and from FSC certified suppliers. All our hives are built using quality stainless A2 screws. Plastics are avoided wherever possible (observation windows are of non-toxic acrylic or glass if specified).

Warré Hives consist of a floor section, one or more hive boxes (2-3 recommended) each with 8 top-bars, a 'quilt' layer box and a roof. They can be supplied with or without integral legs. Construction from 24mm thick timber ensure optimal thermal insulation for the over-wintering colony in cold climates (20mm versions are also available). Floors can be supplied with Varroa mesh screens if required. These are based on the design developed by Emile Warré resulting from research involving over 300 hive designs. They are perfect for natural and biodynamic beekeeping and involve a minimum of manipulative intervention and disease control. They are also excellent for conservation purposes for those wishing to contribute by providing colony nesting sites for wild honeybees.

'Ty Gwenyn' Horizontal Top-bar Hive

Horizontal top-bar hives are available in two lengths: 36" or 48" and can be used with or without  legs. They come complete with top-bars, each with a tapered comb-attachment surface to aid parallel honeycomb attachment, 2 sliding follower boards and a robust weatherproof roof. The standard design has low side entry holes: 3 in the centre and 1 at each end to facilitate easier colony splits. Alternatively the hives can be supplied with end entry points and a landing board either for entry at both ends or one.

National Hive with brood box, super and flat roof (also available with gabled roof configuration). Complete with frames, crown board, queen excluder and mesh floor

Solitary bee nesting habitats

These solitary Bee Houses are designed to provide ideal nesting sites for a wide variety of bee species. Many commercially available bee nesting boxes are designed to look attractive but usually do not have nesting burrows of the correct range of diameters to attract many species. These will not only attract Red Mason bees Osmia rufa, but many other species including burrowing and leaf-cutter bees. They are available in several different combinations including drilled blocks and bamboo tubes or both. Please note we do not make nesting boxes for bumblebees as all research into the efficiency of such artificial nesting sites has shown conclusively that they are almost never used and are hence merely an expensive garden ornament.
